Background of the Study

Climate change has become a major global issue, influencing various aspects of human life, including food security. In Jalingo Local Government Area (LGA), Taraba State, climate change has led to altered rainfall patterns, increasing temperatures, and unpredictable weather conditions that affect agricultural productivity. Agriculture is the backbone of Jalingo's economy, with a large portion of the population engaged in subsistence farming. However, shifting climatic conditions such as prolonged droughts, floods, and erratic seasons have negatively impacted crop yields, making food production less predictable and less sustainable (Abubakar & Umar, 2023). Food security in the region, defined as access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food, is increasingly threatened by these environmental challenges. This study investigates how climate change impacts food security in Jalingo, focusing on agricultural practices, crop productivity, and local food availability, while also examining adaptive strategies employed by farmers to mitigate climate-induced challenges.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Food security in Jalingo is under significant threat due to the effects of climate change, yet there is limited research on how these climatic shifts are affecting food production at the local level. The effects of changing rainfall patterns, temperature extremes, and unpredictable weather events remain inadequately explored, with farmers continuing to face challenges in securing consistent yields. The absence of comprehensive studies on the impact of climate change on food security in Jalingo LGA has hindered the development of targeted interventions to support affected communities. This study aims to assess the extent of climate change’s effects on food security in Jalingo and provide a better understanding of how climate change alters food production systems and local food access.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

• To examine the effects of climate change on agricultural productivity in Jalingo.

• To assess the implications of climate change on local food security in Jalingo.

• To explore adaptation strategies used by farmers to address the impacts of climate change.

1.4 Research Questions

• How does climate change affect agricultural productivity in Jalingo?

• What are the effects of climate change on food availability and accessibility in Jalingo?

• What adaptation strategies are employed by farmers in Jalingo to cope with climate change?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

• H1: Climate change has a significant negative impact on agricultural productivity in Jalingo.

• H2: Climate change contributes to food insecurity in Jalingo by reducing crop yields and availability.

• H3: Farmers in Jalingo employ adaptive strategies that significantly mitigate the effects of climate change on food security.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is important for providing insights into the direct and indirect effects of climate change on food security in Jalingo. By identifying the impacts on agricultural productivity and food access, the study will provide data that can inform local government policies, climate change adaptation plans, and support mechanisms for farmers. The findings can also guide non-governmental organizations and other stakeholders in designing more effective climate-resilient agricultural practices (Abubakar & Umar, 2023). Furthermore, it will contribute to a broader understanding of climate change’s impact on food security, helping to improve preparedness and response strategies in the region.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on Jalingo Local Government Area and will investigate how climate change affects food security in the region. Limitations include the challenge of isolating climate change effects from other local factors influencing food security, as well as potential difficulties in obtaining accurate data on past and current agricultural productivity from farmers.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Climate Change: Long-term changes in temperature, precipitation, and other atmospheric conditions caused by both natural and human-induced factors.

• Food Security: The state of having reliable access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to meet dietary needs.

• Adaptation Strategies: Actions taken by farmers or communities to adjust to changing environmental conditions in order to reduce negative impacts on food production and security.
